Hélène Blondeau

Assistant Professor of French and Linguistics

I joined the faculty of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Florida in 2004. I am also affiliated with the Program in Linguistics, and with the Department of Anthropology.

After receiving my Ph.D. in Linguistic Anthropology from Université de Montréal, I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the FCAR (a prestigious funding institution in Québec, Canada) to do research in the Linguistic Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania (1999-2001). Before arriving at UF, I also spent three years as an assistant professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ottawa (2001-2004), where I also had the opportunity to act as a research associate in the very dynamic Sociolinguistic Laboratory.

My Research Interests

I have always been fascinated by the interaction between language and society, and I am especially interested by the sociolinguistic study of French. I am interested in all varieties of French, more particularly Québec French, and other varieties spoken in North America.

As a sociolinguist, my research interests encompass language variation and change, as well as language contact. For example, one of my current research projects focuses on longitudinal linguistic change in Montréal French. In addition, I do research about the variety of French spoken by young Anglophones living in Montréal, a second language which has nowadays become an integral part of their linguistic repertoire.
