There
will be one written report worth up to 10 possible points on one side of
an issue from the text book Taking Sides: Controversial Issues in Cultural
Anthropology. Each student will pick an issue from those that are being
discussed in class and choose a side. The issue should be summarized (2
possible points), the main points of the chosen side given (4 possible
points), and two (or more) criticisms of the chosen side given (3 possible
points). The criticisms can be arguments against the chosen side, discrepancies
or misrepresentations by the side chosen and/or outside arguments against
or in favor of the chosen side. When using outside arguments give a reference.
The last possible point is for style, spelling and grammar. The report
should be between 500 and 750 words long, which is approximately 2-3 double
spaced pages with Arial font 12. Points will be deducted for insufficient
or excessive length. It is due no later than in class the day the issue
is being discussed.
If you wish you can
give it to me or Leonardo Martinez to look over and see if it meets the
requirements. You do not have to show it to us in advance. If you wish
to show it to us in advance it has to be done at least one week before
it is due, so that we have time to read it, return it to you, and you have
time to implement any changes. We will not tell you what to write, but
will give general comments, such as if you haven't covered the main points,
or if you need more or different critiscisms. Thus, showing it to us does
not guarantee that you get 10 points.
