Policy on Late Papers and Missed Examinations
Late papers will be accepted, but will be marked down half a grade for
each day late. A day in this case is a 24-hour period. If,
for example, the paper is due Monday at the beginning of class, it will
be marked down half a grade (e.g. a B+ to a B) if it is turned in after
it is due, but before 10:40 on the Tuesday. Between 10:40 on the
Tuesday and 10:40 on the Wednesday it will be considered two days late,
and will be marked down a full letter grade. Papers more than
seven days late will not be accepted. Note that weekend do NOT
count in this calculation. A paper handed in at the beginning of
class a week after it is due, for example, will be considered five days
late.
Statements of research question and working bibliography are graded on
a 3-point scale, and will be graded down 1 point per day (i.e. 24-hour
period) late.
Extensions will be granted only in cases of unforseen emergency.
They will not be granted for workload-related reasons - if you have
several papers due at the same time as the paper for this course, or if
you have an exam in another course on the same day, plan ahead and
finish the paper early. Extensions will not be granted under any
circumstances after the paper is due.
Examinations will be held as indicated on the syllabus. The final
exam is relatively late in the exam period - there will be no
opportunity to write exams early, so do not make travel plans that
require you to leave before the exam date. Make-up exams will be
offered only in case of medical absence or similar event, and I will in
all cases require documentary evidence of why you were unable to attend
the exam.
