Angelique V. Nixon


A Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of English at University of Florida, Angelique is specializing in Caribbean and Postcolonial Studies. Her research and teaching interests include African Diaspora Literature, Black Cultural Studies, Race and Identity Politics, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and U.S. Multi-Ethnic Literature (including African American and Native American Literatures). Her dissertation in progress, titled "Consuming Identities: Crosscurrents of Tourism, Diaspora, and Mobility in Caribbean Literature and Culture," investigates the material effects of tourism and neocolonialism on Caribbean cultural production and identity.

Angelique was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. She received a scholarship to travel to the U.S. to pursue higher education and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Due to her strong desire to write about the Caribbean, she decided to attend graduate school and earned her Master's degree in English and is now completing her Ph.D. She has been teaching writing and literature courses for several years at the college level. She is also a creative writer and has published several poems. Concerned with the ongoing struggle for social justice and equality, Angelique strives through her academic, creative, and community work to fight for social change.
