Agnes Ngoma Leslie is a Senior Lecturer and Outreach Director at the Center for African Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Florida.  Dr. Leslie teaches courses in African politics, Women and Politics, policy and development.  Her research focuses on social movements, citizenship, human rights, policy and development, and regional integration in Southern Africa. Her book: Social Movements and Democracy in Africa: The Impact of Women’s Rights in Botswana was published by Routledge in New York and London in 2006.   She is a senior editor of Encyclopedia of African History and Culture: A Learning Source Book.  Dr. Leslie teaches courses including: Women and Politics in Africa, The Model African Union and Women’s International Activism in Paris: Challenges and Empowerment.

As the outreach director for the Center for African Studies she promotes the teaching of Africa in universities, colleges, schools, communities and businesses in the southeastern United States region. In addition, she organizes training workshops and institutes to equip professors and teachers to effectively teach about Africa. She was awarded the Florida Council for the Social Studies International Award (2006) for her excellent contributions toward international relations and cross-cultural understanding.”  She provides in-service teacher training, workshops and summer institutes on Africa at the local, state and national levels.  She is also the editor of Irohin: Bringing Africa to the Classroom, a publication for teachers.  She directs the summer institute for teachers; Jambo, the high school language summer institute, and the Research Affiliate Program.
