Saints
Santo Niño de Atocha

Saints are an important aspect of Yucatecan faith. Sometimes people feel a special closeness or allegiance to one saint and display that saint's image in a home, vehicle, or in a public domain. Sometimes a special devotion exists due to a person's occupation. For example, there are three saints which have special significance for bus drivers: San Cristobal, San Judas de Tareo, and  Beato Fray Sebastian de Aparacio. A bus driver, Carlos, told us that these saints are felt to be protectors of all drivers. He carries a medallion of Beato Fray Sebastian de Aparecio in his bus.

Another important saint relationship exists in the form of a patron saint. Virtually every community has a patron saint which represents the town and serves as a figurehead in people's belief structures. Images of the patron saint are common in both public and private sectors of society. Annually, the patron saint is venerated in a festival which lasts roughly seven days. Festivities frequently include dances, processions, fairs, bull fights, parties, and masses. We experienced one such patron saint festival in the town of Halacho. The patron saint of this town  is Saint Santiago Apostol, who is always depicted riding a white horse, holding a cross in the left hand, and an extended sword in the right hand.
