Candles are commonly used in the home, in celebrations, and in ossuaries.  Electrical lights are sometimes substituted for candles in buses and and in homes. To some, a lit candle or bulb symbolizes Christ's presence.  A candle or light is often left burning all the time. A Yucatecan woman we interviewed told us that she lights a candle on the first day of each month to thank God for giving life.  In December, twelve candles are lit to represent each month.  Another important use for candles can be observed on El Dia de Los Muertos (Novemeber 2nd). On this day candles are lit on all of the ossuaries.
