This summer program in Merida consist of intensive Spanish at several levels as well as courses in Anthropology or Tropical Ecology. Together, two courses in this program, fufill the summer requirement of the State University System of Florida by providing nine credit hours. The course credits may also be applied towards UF's "last 30 hours" residency requirement. The Spanish courses stress the orginization of grammar in the context of everydqay life and conversation in Mexico.

Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Spanish Conversation (4 credits)

Taught in the Department of Foreign Languages, Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan. Small classes of less than ten students, emphasis on conversation, literature and grammar appropriate to Latin America. Advanced courses available for Spanish speakers.

Anthropology and the Yucatan (5 credits)

Taught by faculty in Anthropology, Linguistics, and History of the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan. Course work in English with some Spanish; emphasis on Mesoamerican archaeology, Mayan Linguistics, Colonial History, Yucatan Sociology and Anthropology and Urban Issues.

Tropical Ecology of the Yucatan (5 credits)

Taught by faculty in biology and ecology. Course work in English with some Spanish. Emphasis on the coastal zone (reefs, mangrove swamps, salt flats), the agricultural zone (cenotes, deforestation, slash and burn agriculture), the forest zone (rain forest, ecological parks, development).
NOTE: The five credit hours of Spanish taken on this program may be used to fulfill your language requirement by taking the SAT 2 test at the University of Florida when you return. More importantly, the program helps you really learn Spanish in everyday settings. You will be amazed at the increased proficiency you gain in the Yucatan.
