IDEA, CASE STUDIES

The idea of this group is to foster discussion and interdisciplinary research on the dynamics and resilience of complex systems.  Roads are examples of human structures that have complex effects on both biophysical and socio-economic systems.  Road  systems are widely recognized as causal factors in land use and land cover change.  They impact economies and ecosystems at several spatial and temporal scales. Research questions that the group will address range from theoretical to pragmatic.  

As a way to begin, the group has set before it the task of examining three case studies of places where road building projects are anticipated.  These projects will probably have significant impacts on the biophysical and socio-economic systems of the places where they will be built.  The case studies are all located in South America and include:
