Community Outreach Initiatives

Under the aegis of the Center for Jewish Studies, UF offers an annual Summer Holocaust Institute for Florida's Teachers (SHIFT). Now in its seventh year, this week-long institute provides teachers with the historical background and pedagogical skills to incorporate material about the Holocaust in the K-14 curriculum. During the week, teachers receive the latest information about the Holocaust, examine the many books, websites and other resources devoted to the subject, hear directly from witnesses to the Holocaust and learn about age-appropriate strategies for using this material in their classrooms. Apart from the historical importance of the event, the Holocaust is an excellent vehicle for discussions about democratic education, character education, diversity, and other themes. For information about SHIFT, go to the website at: http://www.jst.ufl.edu/shift.shtml.
