Asian Studies Program
Outreach
Asia is a growing area of geopolitical importance, and the mission of the Asian Studies outreach program at UF is to expand knowledge of Asian history, culture, politics, art, and society throughout the state. To this end we sponsor a variety of outreach activities, most focusing on the K-12 teacher population.
- We recently completed a teacher workshop on China, one of two national digital initiatives funded by NEH in 2007. Teachers across Florida competed for our 26 spaces. Concurrent sessions with teachers in Texas and New York linked all via video-conferencing, live, with guest speakers in New York and California.
- Our primary venue for teachers lies in intensive training seminars on East Asia. These seminars are a part of the National Consortium for Teaching on Asia, and provide a graduate-level overview of East Asian history and culture. As part of the program, teachers prepare and share lesson plans. They return the next year to report on the success of their plans. Additionally, we use exhibitions and UF events, such as a calligraphy exhibit or a Chinese speech contest, as springboards for one-day topical teacher workshops.
- We engage the community at large through art exhibits, lectures, and film series corresponding to contemporary and historical issues throughout Asia.
- Through our Asia-educated teachers and their students, through educating UF students on Asian topics, and by inviting education and discourse via our outreach programs, we work to prepare Floridians for an increasingly globalized workplace and society.
