Stephanie Evans will be honored at the American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting in New York on March 24 as one of the top 10 reviewers of the American Educational Research Journal/Social and Institutional Analysis for 2007.

“Dr. Evans has gone far beyond any expectations of an academic journal reviewer,” said the journal’s co-editors, Sandra Hollingsworth and Margaret A. Gallego, in the award letter. “While most of us complete one or two reviews a year, she completed many more. Sometimes we called on Dr. Evans at a moment’s notice—needing her professional opinion on a manuscript with a tight publication deadline. She was always willing. Her reviews were not only timely, but prepared with a deep understanding of the field of research and a compassionate voice. Even if the recommendation was to reject for publication, she gave such carefully constructed criticism that I often had authors write to thank us.”

Evans is an assistant professor jointly appointed between the African American Studies Program and the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research. Her own research is focused on black women’s intellectual and educational history in the U.S. Her recent book, Black Women in the Ivory Tower, 1850-1954: An Intellectual History,” chronicles black women’s struggle for access to higher education in America.
