4956 Then and Now: The Medieval Pilgrimage Route to Santiago
July 1-July 15, 2006 (new date)
Professor Shifra Armon
Department of Romance Languages and Literatures
Explore a medieval pilgrimage route through Northern Spain next summer
with this two week, 3-credit travel-study course!
Join the tens of thousands of students, scholars and pilgrims who relive
history each year by retracing the road that introduced troubadour love
poetry, Gothic architecture and the cult of the Virgin Mary to Spain:
the St. James Road or Camino de Santiago. We will begin amid the famous
vineyards of in La Rioja, and travel westward by bus and on foot, stopping
to visit monasteries, shrines, archaeological sites and cathedrals along
the route. Our destination is Santiago de Compostela, where, the bones
of St. James the Greater were miraculously “discovered” in
the year 847 C.E., and which became one of the most important pilgrimage
sites in Europe from 1200-1600. Legend, superstition, faith and scientific
method are just four of the many forms of knowing that this course examines.
The course is taught in English and is appropriate for non-majors and
Spanish majors alike. All students with at least one year of College
Spanish or the equivalent are invited to participate.
