About the Major
Philosophy addresses the most fundamental problems that arise when reflecting on the nature of the world and our place in it. Philosophy majors garner critical thinking and sound reasoning skills essential to effective thought and communication. A philosophy major address problems from a conceptual rather than empirical approach, developing models adequate to the phenomena they want to understand.

Some Unique Opportunities in this Major
- Conferences. Philosophy students have the opportunity to attend and participate in professional conferences, including the annual graduate student conference held here in Gainesville and the statewide conference of the Florida Philosophical Association.
- Undergraduate Philosophy Society, a.k.a "Phil Soc". This student group holds weekly meetings with lively discussions of philosophical issues and sometimes arranges larger events, such as bringing a renowned philosopher to campus for a talk.
