About UF in Merida
The Anthropology, Ecology and Spanish departments at the University of Florida offer students an opportunity to earn credits at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan, one of the oldest universities in Mexico. Students in all disciplines are welcome. UF in Merida also includes a special program for bilingual/esol teachers from the state of Florida and for UF education majors. For the summer program (July-August), students will spend six weeks in residence with a host family in the city of Merida which is located in the state of Yucatan. Yucatan is the core of the ancient Mayan civilization.
Our exchange program with the Autonomous University of Yucatan offers 9 semester hours of credit during the summer session (late June until early August), as well as semester and academic year options. This program has been in existence for 14 years and over 600 students have participated in it. It is a fun program with serious academic challenges to help you become proficient in Spanish and learn about the Yucatan of Mexico. The summer program combines intensive Spanish at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels with a course in either anthropology or tropical ecology. The academic year courses include Spanish, History, Linguistics, the Maya language, Literature, Archaeology, and Anthropology at the Autonomous University of the Yucatan. As a true exchange program, we also bring students from the University of Yucatan to the University of Florida during the academic year.
Some of the highlights of the program include:
- Home-stays with Mexican families
- Anthropology course taught by UF faculty on-site
- Spanish language classes at all levels
- Language and Ecology field trips
- Educational visits to bilingual schools and investigations of teaching and learning in Mexico
- Integration with Mexican and International students in university life, political activities and social worlds of the Yucatan
- Semester and academic year exchange programs available
