Nokugu (MT-FX-06) is a large first order settlement, roughly
45 hectares in overall size. The site has a primary and secondary central
plaza, with three major roads and major structural elaborations, including
gateways and canoe/bathing ramps. There are three semi-circular ditches
placed concentrically moving out from the plaza, the deepest middle ditch
reaching over 5.0 meters. There are numerous bridge/gateways where roads
and ditches meet. Ten excavation trenches (10 x 1 m) have been excavated
and provide the primary basis for site chronology based on stratigraphic
evidence of earthwork construction episodes (AD 1250-1400) and intact pre-earthwork
occupation surfaces (AD 800-1250), which form a contiguous stratum of anthropogenic
dark earth with darker, sometimes charcoal infused lenses. Excavation units
in plaza areas document that this area was not used for significant domestic
activities, at least |
