Where we talk about language pedagogy

Fall 2003 Schedule of Meetings

The University Center for Excellence in Teaching

Friday, September 26, 9:35-10:25 in 240A Dauer Hall

For the first session this fall we welcome Dr. Bloomquist, the director of the University Center for Excellence in Teaching, who will talk with us about the history and mission of the Center, its ongoing projects, current activities, and resources available to help teachers. Over the years UCET has sponsored many events like the Critical Thinking Workshop this past August. Come find out what else they have planned.

Creating Community in the Classroom

Tuesday, October 14, 11:45- 12:35 in 240A Dauer Hall

Héloïse Séailles, our new colleague who teaches French and supervises French Teaching Assistants, will lead a discussion on community in the classroom. Does community matter? What kind of communities do we build, and on what principles are they based? Who makes decisions? What about accountability? How do we accommodate cultural differences and a variety of learning styles? If you’ve ever had any of these questions, come talk with us!

Motivating and Unmotivating Students in the Language Classroom

Friday, November 14: 10:40-11:30 in 240 A Dauer Hall

Aisa Said Mohand, Graduate Teaching Assistant in Spanish will lead a discussion on classroom practices that promote or hinder student motivation. How can we as language teachers increase students motivation? How can we become aware of how what we do or dont do encourages or discourages interest and risk-taking in the classroom? If your students seem quieter than you would like, come find out what to do!

All those who teach or hope to teach a language are welcome

Snacks and teas are available free at all sessions
