Making Links

Toolbar--Link--Target--Dragging Bookmarks --Mailto Link--Removing Links

Let's move up to the middle set of tools on the toolbar. These include New (start another new blank page), Open (open a saved page in the composer), Save (save often!), Publish (if you have a home computer you can customize this to send the page right to your public directory on Grove)--these functions are also available under the File pulldown menu.  Next is Preview (view current page in browser), Cut-Copy-Paste (functions also available under the Edit menu, which can be used to edit material not only within a page but from one document to another--for example, you could cut something from a email and paste it into your web page), Print, Find (find a word in the page), Link, Target--let's stop with these. These last two create the "anchors" in your text that allow one to move around on the web.

To make a link, you need a specified anchor text or image on your page. Highlight the text or image you wish to lead to another site. (You can change it later if you need to). Then click on the Link icon. You will get a dialogue box. If you are linking to a distant site, type in the correct address (with attention to punctuation and capitalization). If you are linking to another page in your own web directory, you can  Choose File and get a list of available files.

The links are not active in the Composer window. You have to browse the image (Preview icon) to check to be sure the links work. Frequently, when you make a change in your work in the Composer, save it; then reload the page in the Browser to check your work.

If you are making a large page and want to allow people to access different parts of it, you can insert named anchors by using the Target icon. (This is poorly named, because there is a different function in HTML programming language which uses the word "target," but oh well.) You can insert a target by highlighting a word or phrase at the place you want to be accessible, or just by placing the cursor there and clicking on Target. You will get a small dialogue box asking you to name the target.

Now, when you go to make a link, you will see a list of the targets you have designated on this page; if you link to a different page in your directory which has targets, you will see these targets listed. You can click on the target name to make the link. (There are links to six such targets at the top of this page.)

Dragging Bookmarks: The best way to add links to your pages is to drag bookmarks. You need to spend some time surfing the web and making bookmarks to sites you want to add to your page. Then open your page in the Composer to add the links.

Go to Communicator in the menu at the top of the Composer, choose Bookmarks and then Edit Bookmarks. The Bookmark file will now appear in a separate window. You can hold down the mouse button on any bookmark and drag it to your Composer window. It will appear as text with a good link to the page. If you wish to alter the text after dragging it, you can do so. (If the bookmark has no title, you may wish to rename it before dragging it).

Note: if you are using a lab computer or sharing a computer, remember to delete your bookmarks when you no longer need them. You can make yourself a portable bookmarks page if you wish.

One of the best sorts of links is the Mailto link, which pops up an email message addressed to you. You should always type out your email address in full, since not everyone can use the mailer in Netscape. Highlight the address and click on "Link." Then type as the "page location":

mailto:youraddress@yournode
For example, mailto:jshoaf@clas.ufl.edu

Removing Links from text: Sometimes you have made a link and when you continue typing the new text becomes part of the link. Highlight the section that should not be part of the link and go to Edit--Remove Link.
