What is a Home Page?

A home page is a page named index.htm or index.html (no capitals allowed). When such a page is placed in a directory, it covers the list of files actually in the directory--the "real" index.

My personal directory is on the CLAS server, under users/jshoaf. My home page can be accessed by typing, in the "location" bar, either

http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/jshoaf
OR
http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/jshoaf/index.htm

I have created a folder, a subdirectory called Webpage, for this tutorial, and placed it in the llc directory on the CLAS server. I did NOT make a home page for this subdirectory. The index of all the files in the subdirectory can be seen by accessing

http://www.clas.ufl.edu/llc/Webpage
After you have made your index.htm page, you can make as many other pages as your directory will hold, linked to each other. Just be sure you include the .htm or .html extender on the page name (for example, this page is START_HERE.htm).  It's best to use lowercase letters to name pages and images.

If you have a computer of your own, it's a good idea to keep a complete copy of your website on the hard drive or a diskette, so that you can edit it comfortably.
