Watch for the Call for Papers for the 2008 SEALLT-MAALLT conference!

From the Outgoing President
Georgia Schlau
College of Charleston

The SEALLT / MAALLT Conference 2006, “From The Mountains To The Sea - Technology in the 21 st Century”, was a pleasure to host. I especially enjoyed working and consulting with my counterpart in MAALLT, Betty Facer. The presentations, the meals, and the accommodations were well appreciated by the participants based on the positive comments received in e-mails and the evaluation forms. The success of the Charleston conference can be attributed to the efforts of many people, including one of our members, Frank Kruger-Robbins, who passionately promoted the 2006 Conference. In addition, I want to recognize the work of the Administrative Assistant and staff of the Michael Pincus Language Resource Center who took care of all the details. Last, but not least, I want to express my gratitude to the Dean of the new School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs who made the catering by the College of Charleston Food Service possible through his generous contribution.

It has also been my pleasure to have served as president of SEALLT since 2003 and I want to thank Stacey Powell, our “incoming” president, for immediately taking leadership.  We should continue to remember Marc Mallet’s contributions to our organization. He served for six years as president without whose dedication and hard work there would be no SEALLT organization today.

What I am most proud of this year is that we have established the next two conference sites which will assure the continuation and growth of our organization. A joint conference with SCOLT in Atlanta in 2007 and a joint conference with MAALLT and, possibly, other regional organizations at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale in 2008. Both venues promise to bring many participants and new memberships, especially K-12 teachers in Florida, Georgia, and southern Alabama, making community outreach a high priority in our organization.

In the future, I look forward to continue to associate with the officers of our organization and help out in any way I am needed.
