Pubishing Guidelines

1. All University Scholars Program participants are expected to submit a research paper for publication in the Journal of Undergraduate Research, and any undergraduate at the University of Florida may submit a paper for publication.

2. University Scholars Program participants must have their photo taken and fill out the Online Profile Form and the Project Description Form during the summer they are admitted into the University Scholars Program. If you have not completed these requirements, please contact Buffy Lockette to arrange.

3. Mentors must complete and submit the Submission Approval Form with the paper. Submission Approval Forms may be faxed to 392-5420 or mailed to Creed Greer, UF, PO Box 112032, Gainesville, FL 32611.

4. Papers should be between 1500 and 4000 words, including references. There is no limit on the number of figures and tables in a paper, though professional standards apply.

5. Papers should conform to the manuscript and documentation format appropriate to the student's discipline (APA, IEEE, MLA, CBE, Chicago, etc.), including the labeling and construction of figures and tables.

6. Submit papers in Microsoft Word format via e-mail attachment to Creed Greer. Papers submitted as PDF files will not be accepted.

7. There is not an absolute submission deadline, though papers submitted earlier in the calendar year may have a better chance of being published. Note that University Scholars Program deadlines are posted on the USP website.

8. If the student and mentor are working on confidential research or research that involves obtaining a patent, a paper is not immediately required. Once the research is made public or a patent is obtained, the student is welcomed to publish in JUR. Also, some printed journals stipulate that an article cannot be published in another journal. The student and mentor have the option of determining which journal the paper will be submitted to first. JUR accepts papers that have been published in other journals or might be published in the future. JUR would like to receive as many papers as possible, but does not want to hinder the student from publishing in another, perhaps more recognized journal in his or her field. It is the responsibility of the student and mentor to determine if another journal will accept a paper that has already been published in JUR.
