"As an undergraduate, this is one of the few opportunities to conduct research while working closely with well-established faculty. I hope this research will allow myself and other pre-service teachers to become better educators."

Research Description:
The First Days of School: Practices of Effective Teachers in Urban Classrooms
The purpose of this study is to examine the practices used by effective teachers in urban elementary classrooms during the first few days of the school year. Through videotapes and interviews, I will be able to document in detail the practices used and the decision-making that led to those practices. Given the importance of the first days of school to the success of the school year, it is important that pre-service and in-service teachers have access to detailed images of effective practice.
The beginning of school is a critical time when students learn behavior, attitudes, and work habits that will affect the rest of the school year. Teacher planning for the beginning of the school year is crucial, since they are creating a first impression that sets the stage for the rest of the year. In classrooms of poor and minority students who often do not share the teacher’s cultural background, it is especially important to establish expectations and guidelines for life in the classroom. Students’ ability to participate effectively in the social life of the classroom is correlated with their academic achievement.
