Carlton Thompson

2004 - 2005 University Scholar
Mentor: Rosalind Sadlier
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

"I am interested in going into the biomedical engineering field so I applied to the USP because I saw it as an opportunity to see if this is the career path I really want to pursue. This is also a good chance to make lifetime mentors in a field I am interested in."

Carlton is a senior majoring in electrical and computer engineering. His academic interests include robotics, biomedical technology and computer hardware, and he has been on the dean’s list in the College of Engineering. He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies and serves as a minority ambassador. Carlton is also a member of the Apocalypse Dance Troupe and has participated in the Outreach Ambassadors Program.

Research Description:

Electrical Impedance Tomography

In this project, I used Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) for the development of a system for capturing and reconstructing impedance images of the head, and extracting information about bleeding-related impedance changes from background noise. Results gathered from two and three-dimensional finite element models of the head will be used to test reconstruction methods on a skull model. Noise similar to that expected from in-vivo measurements will be simulated and added to synthetic data to determine the approximate uncertainty in rate estimations.
