Research Description:
Virtual Environment Dining
As technology promises new and exciting jobs in more diverse locations, previously tight-knit families are finding their next of kin spread across the globe to fill those jobs. As a result, there is an increasing need for a stronger sense of unity amongst families. This has never been more apparent than in today's elderly community. As memory begins to fade with age, family becomes an important part of daily life. A face can rekindle many memories once thought forgotten. The promise of modern technology can also work to bring the image of family back into the dining room to create one of America's strongest, yet dwindling traditions, the family dinner.
This research will bring low-cost webcam technology, together with head tracking and curved-surface projection, to create a family dinner experience in which the technology is nearly transparent. Ultimately, this research will be part of a larger set of elderly living enhancements called the Smart House.
