Research Description:

The Effect of Reed Type on Clarinet Performance and Player Preference

The purpose of this study is to compare three different clarinet reed brands for their compatibility and effects on optimal tone and playing comfort for clarinet players to determine if there is a relationship between preference (ranking) and skill level.

By use of purposive sampling from college and professional levels, 50 clarinetists will test three reeds in each of the three major reed companies in the world: Vandoren, Rico, and Gonzalez. After completion of a short demographic and instrument equipment survey, participants will be blindfolded to eliminate visual identification and bias of the reeds. Each participant will be assigned a code number for confidentiality purposes. They will then be asked to play predetermined short musical excerpts on each reed. Quantitative data questions will be asked after each reed being tested via a scale from 1-5. The individual sessions will be recorded by the researcher on mini disc for further analysis by the researcher.
