Research Description:

Defining Women

My project is a portrait series that explores our culture's idea of women. Each of the portraits will be shot with 35mm format, black-and-white film in approximately the same lighting situation with the same equipment. I plan to photograph women of all ages, races, sizes, shapes and backgrounds to get a diversity of women's experience with gender roles. Additionally, I will ask each of the women about their ideas on womanhood-- specifically, what it means to them to be female. I believe that each woman's personal experience will drastically change how she feels, exposing the fact that there is more to being female than a narrowly defined stereotype.
