Azuelejos

These tiles are like the emblem literature hugely popular in England in the 1500s. (Much of As You Like It uses emblems.) This one concerns a man who befriends a bear. They get on exceedingly well and will do anything for each other. One day when the man is sleeping, the bear sees a fly buzzing around the man's head. The bear knows this irritates the man, so he whacks the fly with a large rock. Unfortunately he also crushes the man's head. And the moral of this story would be? Does this have anythng to do with the current war the U.S. is involved in?

Some new azulejos are located on busy streets. Older azulejos can be seen at Lisbon's Museu Nacional do Azulejo, Sintra's Palacio Nacional, Porto's Sao Bento station, Lisbon's Sao Vicente de Fora monastery, and Ingreja do Carmo.
