2007

    We are pleased to announce that the 24th International Literature and Psychology Conference will be held July 4-9, 2007 at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. Our host will be Aleksandar Dimitrijevic.

    The annual International Literature and Psychology Conference (ILPC) provides a forum for the exchange of ideas on the psychological study of literature and other arts. We welcome papers using psychoanalysis or other psychologies to explore literature, film, or other arts. Last year’s participants came from France, England, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Japan, Canada, and, of course, many from all over the U.S.A. Such a group always makes for challenging and intriguing discussions of ideas.

Tourism

    Now that Serbia has recovered from the wars of the 1990s, Old Belgrade Belgrade has once again become a thriving tourist destination. Situated where the Sava river flows into the Danube, Belgrade's history reaches back into the Stone Age. The historic areas and buildings of Belgrade are among the city's premier attractions. They include the old bohemian quarter of Skadarlija, the National Museum and adjacent National Theatre, Zemun, Nikola Pašic' Square, Terazije, Students' Square, the Kalemegdan Fortress, Prince Michael Street, the Federal Parliament, the Temple of Saint Sava, and the Old Palace. On top of this, there are many parks, monuments, cafes, restaurants and shops on both sides of the river Sava, not to mention views of the city from the Avala Monument, on a hilltop overlooking the city.

    Post-war Belgrade has become a hub of regional night life. Visitors cite Belgrade's friendly atmosphere, great clubs and bars, casinos, and low prices.The Lonely Planet Belgrade at night Guidebook says, "the city's vibrancy, fine restaurants and street cafes make it an ideal place to spend a few days." Another travel guide states, "it combines Central European with more Oriental influences, and adds a style and spirit of its own. I can only put it one way: Belgrade is cool." The New York Times says of Belgrade's cool nightlife, "Along the banks of the Danube and Sava Rivers, serpentine chains of music-blasting splavovi - floating raft clubs - snake into the inky Balkan night. Fortified by huge meat-kebab dinners and Turkish coffees from Belgrade's myriad cafes, crowds of night owls line up to partake variously of Gypsy bands, electronic mixes, rock 'n' roll and a distinctly Serbian hybrid known as Turbofolk." And another travel writer notes, "The past and the present are curiously interwoven here, where east and west mingle. Its practical tolerance has made it a cosmopolitan city. Serbs generally and Belgrade residents particularly are open, friendly and direct. They are incredibly hospitable and warm to foreigners, and sometimes generous to the extreme."Gypsy music

    The Steering Committee will, as usual, arrange for tours for our group. We have not made final plans, but at the moment, for Thursday, July 5 we are considering a guided walking tour of Kalemegdan (a huge fortress, half a mile from the Faculty, dating from the Roman times, which is now the most popular park in the city, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers). For Sunday, July 8, we are thinking of visiting a beautiful medieval monastery less than an hour away and finishing the conference with a banquet on a boat. We will also provide a list of recommended restaurants for your other evenings on your own.

Travel

    Belgrade is a major hub for airlines, trains, and highways. Fortress You can also travel easily from Belgrade to the nearby countries of Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, and Greece. A taxi from the airport to the hotel should cost about €10

Registration & Papers

    Papers should be short, 20 minutes at most. Ours is a very convivial conference, but the one complaint we get again and again is that speakers do not stick to the time limit! Please begin now to think about observing this time limit, so as to allow for the maximum number of presenters. Normal speaking rate is 140 words per minute, and, for clarity, a scholarly presentation should be somewhat slower. Our standard 20-minute limit allows you to speak about 2400 words. An additional 10 minutes are allotted for discussion of each paper, and discussion should take place after each paper, not at the end of the session. For each session, there will be a moderator responsible for keeping speakers within twenty minutes. The moderator speaks last in the session, and it is therefore to his or her self-interest to keep to the schedule.

     Papers may be in English, French, or German, and they may deal with any application of psychology to the study of literature, film, or the other arts. And, when submitted for the online or the printed post-conference proceedings, they can be as long as you like. Please prepare your abstract and add it to the registration form below. Abstracts must be less than 150 words. Any excess will simply be cut. Also, please, e-mail your abstract to , our program assistant.

    The deadline for sending us your title and abstract and registration fee is April 1 or the time at which we receive 65 abstracts, titles and registration fees. whichever comes sooner. Papers with completed registration, i.e., all three items submitted, by the deadline are assured a slot on the program. Abstracts submitted after then will be put on a waiting list and will be put on the program as cancellations permit.

    For a complete registration, we require three items:

  1. a completed registration form (see below) including paper title

  2. title and brief abstract of paper (150 words maximum; excess will be omitted). These abstracts enable us to place your paper in an appropriate session. We will also publish them online and distribute the abstracts at the conference.
  3. A registration fee of $225 U.S. (We regret the increase, but the University of Florida has withdrawn its financial support for the conference.) You will find instructions for payment after the registration form below. The $225 includes a $25 tax-deductible donation to the PsyArt Foundation, as voted in 2005. The registration fee is refundable (except for the $25 donation) for any reason until May 1, but not thereafter for any reason. The donation makes you a member of PsyArt, entitled to attend and vote at the annual meeting in Belgrade.

In 2006, last-minute changes in titles, abstracts, and schedule caused endless difficulty for the organizers. This year, we will not accept changes in title or abstract after May 15 nor changes in the schedule after one week from the time the organizers e-mail the schedule.



Payment

    The registration fee is $225 U.S., $25 of which is a tax-deductible donation to the PsyArt Foundation which supports the conference, the journal, and the listserv. We regret the increase, but financial difficulties at the University of Florida have made it necessary. The registration fee (except for the 25$ donation) is refundable for any reason until May 1, but not for any reason thereafter. The donation makes you a member of PsyArt, entitled to attend and vote at the annual meeting to be held on Sunday, July 8, in Belgrade.

     For Western European and other non-U.S. registrants, we have found a local bank that does not put a heavy surcharge on foreign checks. Non-U.S. registrants can pay with a Eurocheque for $225 U.S. or the equivalent in euros, made out to "PsyArt Foundation" and sent to Mrs. Moreno at the address above.

    Alternatively, either U.S. or non-U.S. registrants from many countries can pay through our PsyArt account at PayPal.com. That way you can simply charge your registration to your credit card over the Internet with no delay and save the bother of mailing a check. If you do pay this way, however, we ask that you add 3% ($7) to your payment, because that is what PayPal charges us for a credit card payment into the account.

    Registrants may choose to sign up for a PayPal account during the Web "Accept payment" process. An "account" simply means telling PayPal your name, address, and your credit card number.

    Registrants outside the U.S. may need to take a few extra steps to pay or to establish a PayPal account. You may need to sign up for PayPal separately before making payment to the conference. Here are the directions for doing so.

    Signing up for a PayPal account does not commit you to anything--it just enables you to use your credit card to make payments on the Internet to this conference (and anything else that catches your fancy).
