Report on the First ICLS Congress
Philadelphia, May 1974

The first triennial Congress was held at Philadelphia in May, 1974. On the first afternoon and until 10 A. M. on the second day, over thirty papers were read in various sections by members of the Society.
On the evening of May 6th the banquet was well attended. On the platform were seen the following members and guests: John F. Benton (California Institute of Technology), Louis F. Solano (Temple University), F. R. P. Akehurst (University of Minnesota), Karina Niemeyer (University of Michigan), Peter Dronke (Cambridge), R. R. Bezzola (Switzerland), Charles Dahlberg (Queens College of SUNY). There were no speeches.
After the banquet most of the participants at the Congress went to see a performance of Aucassin et Nicolette directed in a delightfully toung-in-cheek style by Daniel Moors (Temple University), and performed by students and faculty at Temple University.
On the second day of the meeting, after the early group sessions, Karina Niemeyer chaired a plenary session at which the featured speakers were Reto R. Bezzola, who spoke in French on "'Matière et sens' d'une étude de littérature courtoise," and Peter Dronke, who spoke on "Francesca and Heloïse." Discussant for Professor Dronke's paper was John F. Benton.
