Minutes

The meeting began at 10:00 am.  The Minutes from the previous meeting were adopted.

The Committee discussed what information should be provided to the CLAS Dean Search Committee, and to Dean prospects. Ken Wald proposed that the Committee write a brief preamble (or “advocacy piece”) that outlined many of the financial challenges facing the College. The primary topic would be the need for faculty hiring. The Committee agreed that we should continue to collect data, and that the Dean Search Committee be consulted about the data they need. After collecting the data we will write the preamble. It was also proposed that any financial data provided to the Dean Search Committee be reviewed by the Finance Committee.

The discussion turned to the allocation of another $100K of OE funds. Alan Dorsey reviewed some of the comments made at the Chairs and Directors meeting on October 17. The proposed allocation mechanisms included: (1) making up about one-third of the cuts that were implemented in the 2007/08 OE allocations; (2) distributing the OE according to faculty FTE; (3) using the results of the OE audits as well as the June 2007 allocation formula to guide distributions. Concerns were raised about the allocations to centers (how are faculty FTE counted?), and more generally the FTE figures for each department. Alan will check with Kimberly Browne about the numbers. Before making any recommendations, the Committee would like answers to the following questions:

  1. Are there any “holes” in department budgets? If so, have the holes been plugged?
  2. How were the faculty FTEs calculated?
  3. Where there themes that emerged from the department audits?
  4. How were the faculty FTE numbers calculated?
  5. Are there College-wide problems that require attention: faculty and graduate student travel, computers and IT infrastructure, etc?

The meeting concluded at 11:30 am.

Next meeting

The next scheduled meeting will be on Monday, November 5, at 10:00am.

Respectfully Submitted
Alan Dorsey
