Minus Grades
Minus grades are here! Beginning with courses offered Summer A/C 2009, professors will have the option to assign minus grades.
- Faculty should complete amendment of Summer 2009 syllabi to reflect the addition of minus grades by March 1, 2009.
- Departments should review course prerequisite parameters immediately.
- Grade point values are changing! Plus grades are now valued at .50 and will change to .33 as minus grades are implemented. The minus grade value will be a .67 (C+ = 2.33, C- = 1.67)

- The implementation of minus grades will not change the definition of a grade point deficit. A C average will remain a 2.00.
- Only grades higher than C will lower a deficit. Every credit of C+ earned removes .33 from a deficit (a C+ in a three-credit course removes .99 deficit points); every credit of B removes 1 deficit point; and every credit of A removes 2 deficit points.
- UF academic policies relative to “C” thresholds remain the same (“C” equals 2.0)!
- A “C-” will be treated differently than a “C” in repeat course processing since “C” is the threshold grade.
S/U Option
Currently an S/U course must be graded as a “C” or better to receive an “S.” Therefore, if a faculty member assesses the work of a student as a “C-” (1.67) or lower they should assign a grade of “U.”
General Education Credit
A “C-” (1.67) will not result in an award of General Education credit.
Writing and Math (Gordon Rule) Requirement
Students earning a “C-” (1.67) in writing/math courses taken to fulfill these requirements will not receive writing/math (Gordon Rule) credit.
President’s Honor Roll policy remains the same!
“A-” grades will not yield the perfect 4.0 GPA required to achieve the President’s Honor Roll designation.
UF Repeat Course Policy remains the same!

Links
Due to the institution of minus grades and the resulting changes in the grade point equivalencies of letter grades, all UF course syllabi must contain information on grade point equivalencies for the grades to be assigned in each course.
The UF Policy on Course Syllabi now requires that all UF course syllabi must contain information on current UF grading policies for assigning grade points, even if the course does not use minus grades. This may be achieved by including a link to the appropriate undergraduate catalog web page.
