TRANSNATIONAL CULTURES SYMPOSIA SERIES
“Latin America Writes Back: Science Fiction and the Global Era”

An International Symposium presented at the University of Florida
October 27-29, 2005

This symposium reflects the growing interest in science fiction in Latin America. It explores the innovation and transformation of the popular genres of science fiction and fantasy as they are used by Latin American artists to portray their reality in the globalized world. Authors, filmmakers, and critics will discuss contemporary works—both literary and cinematic—of Latin American science fiction and fantasy, focusing on the genre’s challenge to the literary canon, its transformation of the concepts of city and urbanization, the growing presence of female characters and feminist approaches, and the role of technology in developing countries.
