Roberta Knickerbocker
Head of the CLAS
Academic Advisor Roberta Knickerbocker has won the 2011 Outstanding Advising Award from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). The honor is given to individuals who are making significant contributions to the field of academic advising. She will be presented the award at the association's annual conference in October.
NACADA has over ten thousand members, and consists of university faculty, professional advisors, administrators, and counselors from across the country.
This award affirms that UF is a good place to be, Knickerbocker said. I love what I do here, and I value the privilege of working with students and faculty on campus.
Knickerbocker has worked in the CLAS Academic Advising Center since 2007. She advises pre-health students interested in pursuing application to schools and programs in fields ranging from medicine to dentistry to physical therapy. She also advises Biology, Botany, and Zoology majors in the CLAS Biology Department.
I come to advising from a little different path, she said. I was originally trained as a Registered Nurse and worked in nursing for 38 years. While completing my second masters in counseling, I was fortunate to work in the counseling center at a small Midwest liberal arts college, where I found a great love of working with students in higher education.
At UF, Knickerbocker's work begins the moment a student joins the Gator Nation, and persists in support of that student throughout his or her journey toward admittance to a graduate program.
It is always the students that remain an inspiration for me, she said. I'm passionate about empowering, encouraging, and supporting students in achieving their goals..
