Dr. Julie Silva is the winner of the American Association of Geographers' prestigous Nystrom Award. Her paper, titled "Neoliberalization and Inequality in Mozambique: A Case Study in the Use of Iterative Mixed Methods", was recognized as the best doctoral thesis in geography for the year.
Dr. Silva, who joined the Department of Geography in August, is a joint appointment with the Center for African Studies. Silva continues to research local and regional dynamics of inequality on uneven development in Mozambique as they relate to changing market structures, and will travel to the country in the Summer of 2007 to continue working on this longitudinal study. In addition, Silva researches the effects of economic globalization and climate change and changing economic conditions within the United States.
This is the third consecutive year that the University of Florida has been represented in the final for the Nystrom award. Dr. Cori Matyas was a finalist last year, and in the year before that UF graduate Dr. Andres Guhl made it to the same stage.
