UF's Department of Criminology, Law and Society recently ranked No. 11 among graduate programs, according to U.S. News and World Report, and criminology professor Alex Piquero has played an important role in this success.
Piquero, who is a 2005 Magid Term Professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, came to UF in 2001 and quickly made a name for himself in the criminology field. His research involves several longitudinal studies that examine the patterns of lifetime criminal activity, as well as the factors that account for changes in criminal activity.
Piquero's newest book, "Offending Over the Life Courses: The South London Males at Age 40," will be published later this year by Cambridge University Press, and he also is working on a study that examines how serious juvenile offenders transition out of crime in late adolescence and early adulthood. He serves on the editorial boards of 10 journals and teaches Doctoral Methods, Life-Course Criminology and Criminological Theory.
The American Society of Criminology has recognized Piquero with the Ruth Shonle Cavan Award, which honors outstanding scholarly contributions to the discipline of criminology. The FBI and Bureau of Justice Statistics also have appointed Piquero to serve on a committee that is revamping the crime index used by the federal government.
In 2005, Piquero received a UF Teacher of the Year Award in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He teaches Research Methods in Criminology, Life Course Criminology, Theories of Crime and Deviance, and Criminological Theory.
