2006 CLAS Hall of Fame

The CLAS Hall of Fame annually recognizes outstanding scholars who also have demonstrated strong extra-curricular activity and dedication beyond the classroom setting. Through this award, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council (CLASSC) honors the following graduating seniors who have made a difference on campus and in the community during their time at the University of Florida.

Justin BangsJustin E. Bangs, a history and political science double major, with a minor in women’s studies, from Orlando, Florida, served as president of UF’s Environmental Action Group and vice president of the Outreach Ambassador Program. He founded the nonpartisan voter education program Gators for Democracy and was a member of VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood and Project Democracy, as well as a teaching assistant in political science. A J. Wayne Reitz Scholar, Anderson Scholar, and a member of the Matthews Society, Bangs served the Office of the Provost on the Committee on Sustainability. He has received the Hazen E. Nutter Scholarship, the Bridget Phillips Scholarship and the Daniel J. Koleos Research Award. Bangs is a member of the UF Hall of Fame and is also a 2005 recipient of the Morris K. Udall scholarship. In the fall, he will begin the Master of Philosophy degree program in environment, society, and development at the University of Cambridge, England as a Gates Cambridge Trust Scholar.

Monique DieuvilMonique Dieuvil is a biochemistry major with a minor in dance from Weston, Florida. She has served as a Preview orientation director and as a program assistant for the University Minority Mentor Program. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and has held several leadership positions. Dieuvil, who has volunteered in the emergency room of Shands Hospital at UF, participated in the National Institutes of Health Minority Summer Research Program with UF’s College of Medicine in 2003 and 2004. She served as a CLAS student senator for Student Government in 2005 and also participated in the summer and fall programs of Pledging to Achieve Academic Competence Together (PAACT). She plans to attend medical school in the fall.

Christopher FieldsChristopher “Ryan” Fields, a religion major with minors in history and philosophy from Jacksonville, Florida, has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average at UF. He is a member of the Honors Ambassadors, Phi Eta Sigma and has served as president of Reformed University Fellowship. A student in the University Honors Program, Fields was named an Anderson Scholar of Highest Distinction, inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and selected to the University Scholars Program, conducting research in Edinburgh, Scotland. He will serve as a 2006-2007 pastoral intern at Creekside Community Church and later hopes to participate in the John Jay Institute for Faith, Society and Law in Colorado. He also plans to pursue a Master of Divinity degree in preparation for pastoral ministry, and would like to eventually pursue a Ph.D. in theology.

Emily Marie FriendAn English major and member of the Honors Program from Jacksonville, Florida, Emily Marie Friend served as president of Recurso, a nonprofit organization that provides educational and service opportunities to students about poverty alleviation in the developing world. She also served as president of the Women’s Leadership Council, organizing and assisting with all operations, including an annual 250-participant conference. A member of Golden Key, Eta Sigma Phi and Sigma Tau Delta Honor Societies and Florida Blue Key, Friend founded the Women’s Mentoring Program, which matches students with professionals in their desired careers to encourage them to reach their full potential. Friend, a J. Wayne Reitz Scholar, O. Ruth McQuown Scholar and Hazen E. Nutter Scholar, will attend law school at the College of William and Mary in the fall.

Andrew HoffmanA psychology and English double major from Boca Raton, Florida, Andrew L. Hoffman has interned at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the White House. He has served UF as a Preview orientation leader, president of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council and the Rules and Ethics Committee Chairman in the Student Senate. Hoffman, who has served as the sole student voice on several faculty committees, is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Scholar. This summer, Hoffman will intern at the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Secretary, Privacy Office. He will attend law school in the fall.

Jennifer KressJennifer L. Kress, a biology major from Wellington, Florida, has performed research at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, where she used spectroscopy and anisotropy techniques to analyze interactions with actin protein. She was also a teaching assistant for genetics and organic chemistry classes. In addition to serving as director of community service for the preprofessional service organization board of directors, Kress has volunteered for the Stop! Children’s Cancer Fantasy Event, Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Home Society. She has served as an exercise instructor in UF’s Fitness and Wellness program and has published a national article on physical adaptations for children with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Kress plans to become a medical doctor and ultimately an advocate for abused children.
