Brief Biography

Joseph Spillane, Associate Professor of History, joined the University of Florida faculty in 1995 and served as Chair of the Department of History from 2006 to 2010.

A historian of modern America, his research areas include social policy, criminal justice, and drug control.

His work has been supported by the Spencer Foundation and the National Science Foundation, and he has published Cocaine: From Medical Marvel to Modern Menace in the United States (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2000), co-authored A History of Modern American Criminal Justice (Sage, forthcoming), and co-edited Federal Drug Control: The Evolution of Policy and Practice (Haworth Press, 2004), and Prison Work: A Tale of Thirty Years in the California Department of Corrections (Ohio State University Press, 2005). Spillane is also the current President of the Alcohol and Drugs History Society.
