American Universities: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you send me a list of schools that offer Mechanical Engineering (Business, Art, etc)?

Sorry. I just list home pages. All the information I have is on the page. To find a school that suits your needs, you may wish to use a professional service. I can't recommend a particular one as I do not endorse commercial entities.

Can you add geographic information so I can find schools near me?

Sorry, I have no plans to add this information.

Can you send me information on financial aid?

I just list home pages. I have no other information about the schools.

Can you send me the names and addresses of the schools?

I just have the web addresses. You can find mailing addresses for schools that are members of Educause at their web site -- http://www.educause.edu.

Are all the schools on the American Universities page accredited?

I do not know. I do not check accreditation information. Turns out that would be hard to do -- schools are accredited by many different organizations. When I find out that a school is a "diploma mill" -- that is, the "school" is not really a school but a business that will sell you a degree if you provide them with money, I remove them from the list.

Can you add my school to your list?

Generally yes. To get your school listed, just send the official name of the school and the web address (also known as a URL or Uniform Resource Locator such as http://www.ufl.edu) to me and I will be happy to add it to the list.

Here are the criteria
What about distance learning? Do some of the schools offer it? Are there schools on your list without campuses?

Many of the schools on the list offer programs at a distance. I just list home pages and have no other information. Some of the schools on the list are "distance learning only" type schools and have no campuses.

I can't find Notre Dame, Tennessee, etc.

Schools are listed by official name. The official name of Notre Dame is "The University of Notre Dame" and you will find it under "U" for University. If you are in doubt about where a school might be on the list, you can use the "Find" feature of your browser. Under "Edit" (Netscape and Microsoft browsers) pull down to "Find". Enter the name. Your browser will locate the name on the page.

The link to school xxx doesn't work. Can you fix it?

Well, no. The web sites are maintained by the schools. Sometimes the school's server or communication lines have trouble and a web site will be unreachable. These problems are typically corrected within a day.

The link to school xxx is wrong. Can you update your link?

Yes! If I'm linked to the wrong site, please let me know and I will be happy to update my link.

Where did you get all these links?

Mostly from my readers. They inform me of incorrect links and they offer links to schools that I do not have.

How many schools are there in the US and how many are on your list?

The answer to the first question is "I don't know." Various sources list the number between 2,500 and 5,000 depending on the definitions used. I currently have about 1,570 on my list. To be on my list the school must have a web site as well as be in the US and offer bachelor degrees and/or advanced degrees.

Your list appears to be light on Medical Schools (Historically Black Colleges, Women's Colleges, Law Schools, etc), why is that?

Well, I put every school I learn of that meets the criteria on the list. As people write me, I add.

Can you add a link from my site to your site?

In general, no. I do not link to commercial sites and there is no advertising on my page. I provide the page as a public service. I have provided just a few links on the page and they are to other sites like mine that will help people find lists of schools.

Can I link to your site?

Yes -- there are many links to the American Universities page from all over the world.

Can I copy your site?

Please do not copy my site. It is maintained and your copy will become old. If you want to offer the page to your readers, please just link to my site at http://www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/au. Pages that look like mine may be unauthorized copies.

If you don't see the answer to your question above, please send me a note using the email link below.
