Academic Programs
The Asian Studies major is designed to provide an interdisciplinary focus on a region that is remaking global economic, political, and cultural maps in the 21st century. In addition to the fundamentals of Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, and Indonesian, the student will become acquainted with specifics of the history, culture, and religions while learning to distinguish between the social sciences and humanities as ways to approach a culture. An Asian Studies major will equip you to deal intelligently and sensitively with Asia-related issues whether in business, government, or non-profit organizations, and provide a foundation for further specialization at the graduate and professional level.
Asian Studies maintains a close relation with the East Asian Languages and Literatures major (EALL) in the Department of African and Asian Languages and Literatures. Students who desire a more language and humanities intensive engagement with either Chinese or Japanese are encouraged to explore this option as well.
