Lectures
2010 Lecture Series
Although dates are still under negotiation with the presenters, here's what's on tap for 2010:
- Summer 2010 -- Richard J. Samuels, Ford Int'l Professor of Political Science at MIT's PoliSci Dept. will be the scholar in residence for UF's Institute on US Foreign Policy's summer 2010 program. Samuels is a specialist in international affairs and was the founding director of MIT's Japan Program. He will give one evening lecture for us, on Japan -US relations.
- Fall 2010 -- Tianlong Jiao, chair of anthropology at Bishop Museum, has been invited by John Krigbaum to speak on the origins of rice domestication or on the early Neolithic maritme economy in SE China. (The topics are closely related -- the development of sea-faring vessels ramps up once a population develops a readily transportable, slow-to-spoil food supply.)
- Fall 2010 -- Yoko Hiraoka returns to UF to play her Japanese biwa, a type of lute, at the suggestion of Yumiko Hulvey. Music written for the biwa often commemorated events such as large- scale battles and the instrument is used in narative singing.
- Fall 2010 -- Miranda Brown, associate professor of Chinese history at the University of Mich, has been invited by Guolong Lai to talk about the origins of Han stone monuments.
- Fall 2010 -- If you enjoy Japanese film-making, you'll enjoy Aaron Gerow's presentation on Japanese cinema. He's from Yale's Film Studies Dept. and he's being invited by Maureen Turim.
