2004 Seminar ParticipantsRoger BoneVenice High School; Venice Roger has a B.A Government/International Affairs; B.A Social Studies Education, and Jurisdiction Doctor in Law. He holds a certificate in Gifted Education. This is his second year teaching. He has lived in Germany for four years and was a JAGC officer for five years in the army. Roger alsolives on a boat. Thea CassettaBishop Moore Catholic High School; Orlando Thea's interest in Asia goes back to her childhood. Her father is retired from the Air Force. While on active duty, they were stationed in Okinawa, Japan. She loved living in Okinawa and also had the opportunity to visit Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and mainland Japan. She is in her 6th year of teaching at Bishop Moore, 15th overall. She has taught most courses in the Social Studies department, but particularly enjoy World History and Geography. She also teaches History of the Vietnam War- a course she developed at Bishop Moore. Ruth Ann DexheimerMadison Street Academy of Visual and Performing Arts; Ocala She is a mother of two sons. Both are graduates of UF. Her husband is a high school chemistry teacher. She graduated from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Youth Leadership. She has been teaching since 1968 mostly in the Lutheran School System. She has always gravitated to teaching art. She has taught art K-12 at the same time for ten years. Her art courses were taken at Saint Petersburg JR. College and she received her are art certification in 1986. She has just finished working on her National Boards. She now teaches in an Elementary school with emphasis on doing 3D art, working especially with clay. We have heavy emphasis on art appreciation and art history. She wants to include Asia art as much as possible and to connect with the Asian art already at her local art museum. She also has two adopted/Chinese nieces and want to relate their culture to them as much as possible. Susan DupreeGateway High School; Kissimmee She lives in Indian River County and each in Oxeola County. She has taught for 18 years in various Florida Counties. She has taught overseas for 14 years in the Counties of Cameroon, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Ecuador, and Saudi Arabia. She lived in Thailand for 8 years in Thailand and traveled most of Southeast Asia. She has taught every grade level from kindergarten to 12th grade. Her and her husband have two Siamese cats; one was acquired in the VAE and the other in Ecuador. Catherine Fedonni Punta Gorda Middle School; Punta Gorda Catherine graduated from Siena Heights College in 1980 with a bachelor of Art, major in fine arts. While at Siena Heights, she spent two semesters studying in Florence, Italy. Upon graduation, she moved to Florence, where she spent the next 11 years. She has been living in South West Florida for the past 13 years. She found her calling into the teaching profession when she started volunteering in the youth ministry at her church. This prompted her to go back to college to attain her teaching certificate. She was fortunate to find a teaching position in art at Punta Gorda Middle School where she has been teaching for the past 5 years. Her students creativity never ceases to amaze her. Angela M. GiddensHigh Springs Community; High Springs Angela teaches 6th and 7th graders. She is the Varsity Girls Soccer coach at Santa Fe High School in Alachua, Fl. This is her sixth year teaching and third year in Alachua County Sean GriffinDunbar High School; Fort Myers Augustus R. (Gus) Hough, Jr.Port Saint Lucie High School; Port Saint Lucie This is Gus' 13th year being the teacher for honors and AP. Having spent 17 years in financial services prior to teaching, he know how important the global marketplace is and how advantageous understanding others’ cultures are. With his new knowledge (Asian culture), he hopes to pass on to his future businessmen and women. He will be attending with his wife, Judy, and look forward to spending Friday evenings with our pharmacy school son, Rob. He enjoy kayaking, scuba diving, bicycling, and playing golf. Judith HoughSouthport Middle School; Port Saint Lucie Judy is the only art teacher at Southport Middle. She is finishing her 25th year of teaching in Saint Lucie County. She is originally from Missouri and enjoys arts and crafts. She is married and will be attending this seminar with her husband, Gus. Their son, Rob, attends Pharmacy School at UF. She is anxious and excited about this Asian Studies program. Katherine de JonghEdgewater High School; Orlando Jennifer KolessarMillennium Middle School; Sanford Nicole LeeMillennium Middle; Sanford In May of 1998, Nicole graduated from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT with a BA in English Literature and Film. During that summer, she moved to Orlando, Fl to begin a teaching career and to work on her master’s degree. She received her Med. In Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida in August of 2002. She currently teach 6th grade English at Millennium Middle School in Sanford, Fl. In the spring of 2003, she completed the requirements for the National Board of Professional Teaching Certification. Also, she have served as department chair to the Language Arts department and headed curriculum writing in two different schools. She absolutely loves researching information and putting lessons together for her students. She has always been fascinated with the Orient and she jumped at the chance to be a part of the University of Florida’s Asian Studies program. Kim E. Mazzilli Harbour View Elementary; Summerfield After two years as a Commercial Art and Design major at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., Kim left school to fully devote herself to her family. When her sons were 8 and 12 years old, she returned to her studies and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fl. She is now in her twelfth year of teaching art at her preferred level: Elementary. Her and her husband moved to Ocala two years ago. They enjoyed living in the historic district where they take long walks, garden and paint in their home studio. She is interested in this course because she knows it will enrich the program she brings to her students. They look at Japanese Temples in their architecture unit and her first graders love painting, plum blossom paintings, and then stamping them with a chop of their own design. Cultural ties and social studies are what she loves about teaching art to children. She sometimes feel she would like to pursue a Master’s Degree. She is also hoping this course will give her some inspiration in that direction. Katie McDonaldGaither High School; Tampa Katie is a senior at the University of South Florida. She is completing her final Internship at Gaither High School in Tampa, Fl. Jessica MoreySIATech Charter High School; Gainesville Jessica loves to read, travel, and learn new things! Vilma S. NormandBelleview Middle; Belleview Vilma has been married for 25 years to Michael. She has two children: Mike and Natalie. Mike is a West Point graduate of 2004. 2 LT. US Army, Fort Hood, Texas and Natalie is studying Veterinary Assistant Science. Vilma is a former US Army (Signal) Captain. She has been to Belleview Middle School for the last ten years. First four years as BMS ESOL teacher, since then 6th and 7th grade Geography. This year 7th grade only. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She has a BA from the University of Puerto Rico. She did graduate studies from Saint John’s University, New York. Jarrett PhippsJohn Paul II Catholic High School; Tallahassee Jarrett has always known she wanted to teach history. She majored in European History at Florida State University. She received her masters with a specialty in 20th century Europe. She has taught Western Civilization. Since 1993. Recently she began to teach World Civilization. She don’t want this class to be European History with the rest of the world as a side thought. She is very excited about the Asian Studies course, because it will help to gain knowledge to make her world history course world centric. She married later in life (age 36) to a wonderful man. They have been married for 5 years. Her husband also has two children, so she has been lucky to be a step mom. Carol Richardson Palmetto Middle School; Miami Carol is a candidate for National Board for Professional. She won Dade County Social Studies Teacher of the Year finalist. She graduated from University of Florida. Diana RiedGainesville High School; Gainesville Linda A. WinchesterGlenridge Middle School; Orlando Linda graduated from Mundelein College/ Loyola University Chicago. She began her teaching career at Notre Dame High School for Girls.
