CLAS Alumnae of Achievement Honored During Kickoff

Joan Ruffier, CLAS alumna (BA English, '61), first female president of the Board of Regents and president-elect of the Florida Foundation Board, was one of 47 awarded an Alumna of Achievement Medallion by President Lombardi during September's ceremony. The Convocation, which marked 50 years of co-education and 20 years of women's studies at UF, coincided with the capital campaign kickoff.

The 47 Alumnae of Achievement pose around the permanently installed plaque which bears their names. The memorial was installed and dedicated outside the University Auditorium during the Campaign Kickoff weekend. President Lombardi and Provost Capaldi (center) officiated.

Kim Tanzer, one of the UF architects who designed the model for the renovation of the Women's Gym (The "Old Gym"), explains the detailed plans.

Al Burt (English), roving columnist for the Miami Herald from 1973-95, recently published his third book, a collection of essays titled Al Burt's Florida: Snowbirds, Sand Castles, and Self-Rising Crackers (Florida Press). After 45 years of journalism, Burt has retired to Melrose.


Stanley T. Escudero is currently serving as US Ambassador to the Republic of Uzbekistan. Ambassador Escudero has over thirty years of foreign service including extensive experience in Central Asia, Iran, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa as well as in Washington. From 1992 to 1995 he served as the Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan.


Harry A. Magee (BA '68, MA '69) has been appointed Instructor in the Graduate Counseling Program at Barry University in Miami.


Roderick Dean Odom (Psychology), who began his career with Southern Bell in 1972, was recently named President of BellSouth Business Systems, the $3.1 billion unit of BellSouth Telecommunications (BST).

Dr. Harvey J. Feld (Chemistry), a pathologist, is currently practicing in Dade City and Zephyrhills. He was recently selected for inclusion in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in Science and Engineering," and was also named Brooks Brothers "Man of the Year" in 1995 by the Leukemia Society, Suncoast Chapter.


Leonard Spearman (Psychology) earned his law degree from Texas Southern University in 1986, and was recently named Regional Manger for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. His duties include the environmental oversight of thirteen counties.

CLAS Grand Guard Reunion

Charles Parker '42, Herb Kay '40, Jeanne Kay, Martha Skinner, and Henry Skinner '37, attended the CLAS Grand Guard Reunion in September. The annual event honors alumni who graduated from UF 50 or more years ago. This year's participants reminisced and discussed campus changes and UF's future plans with Dean Harrison at a special luncheon, held in the Ruth McQuown room in Dauer Hall.
