Never in the history of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have we experienced the level of giving that we have in the last five years during the "It's Performance That Counts!" capital campaign. In late 1994, the original goal of $30 million over the five-year life of this capital campaign was established. In the fall of 1997, the administration decided to raise that goal to $45 million when it became apparent we would reach our original goal early in the campaign. Now here we are in the fall of 2000, and it is our sincere pleasure to report that CLAS has raised over $52 million in gifts and pledges!
This amazing show of support comes from a variety of generous donors. Our alumni have given us the most assistance, contributing over 60% of the total funds raised. This is a fantastic testimony to the feelings, gratitude, and positive experiences that our alumni have regarding their alma mater. We are pleased to report that UF has one of the highest giving rates for alumni in the country. This is just another example of how proud our students are to be Gators.
Another wonderful avenue of support has come from retired faculty. Scholarships and professorships have been established by some of our emeriti faculty that will benefit the college and the university in perpetuity. We have also been fortunate to attract the attention of some major corporations and foundations. They have discovered that giving to CLAS is a wise and sound investment for the future.
There is still much to be done here at CLAS and we are continuing to look for private support in order to reach the goals that we have set for ourselves. UF will persist to strive for our place among the top ten universities in the country. That goal can only be attained if the university's core--the center of all academic life, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences--continues to grow and surpass all expectations.
To all of you who have made contributions to this great college, we thank you. You are the true heroes. Our pledge to you is that the success of this campaign will not be measured solely by the number of dollars raised. We now embrace the task of demonstrating what your contributions have done and will do for the college and its students and faculty. We want you to know how many more students will have an opportunity for a quality education, how many more outstanding faculty we will hire, how many more talented graduate students we will recruit, how much more valuable research we will perform, and how many more times we will conduct education outreach into the communities of this great state. Through articles in this publication and others, and through events at the university and throughout the state, we will keep you informed about how your immensely important investments have contributed to the growth of this institution that we all love and believe in so strongly.
