Summer 2007 – ESOL in Paris - Bilingual Education Program

The UF Paris Research Center is pleased to announce the inauguration of a new international opportunity for UF students campus-wide. The ESOL/Bilingual Education program in Paris promotes cross-cultural understanding for UF students through a cross-disciplinary approach to international education. The program offers challenging interactive on-site courses taught by UF faculty members and is enhanced by excursions, guest speakers, and site visits. This unique program is designed as two multifaceted courses that integrate academic coursework, field experiences in Paris, and focused excursions planned to give insight as to how language policies and issues are addressed in modern Europe.   For more information about this program, please contact Dr. Maria Coady - mcoady@coe.ufl.edu, Dr. Candace Harper - charper@coe.ufl.edu or Dr. Gayle Zachmann – paris-research@clas.ufl.edu.

Courses and Program Structure

  • Phase 1
    The first week of the program will begin in the US, providing an overview analysis of educational issues and policies in the United States.
  • Phase 2
    The second week of the program kicks off 5 weeks of  continued studies in the heart of the Parisian Latin Quarter at the UF Paris Research Center (May 27-June 29).

Courses Offered

Foundations of Language and Culture in the Elementary Classroom

(TSL 3526/EDG 6931, 3 Credits)
This course introduces foundations of language and culture in educational settings. 
Topics to be explored include socio-cultural theory and equity in context of education; language and linguistic subsystems; second language acquisition theories and processes; and learner styles and teaching strategies with second language students.

This course meets the Florida requirement in the ESOL infused elementary PROTEACH program.  The course is also offered at the graduate level for students wishing to explore language policy issues in Europe at that level. Language Policy and Educational Issues in Modern Europe

(EDF 3810/EDF 6812, 3 Credits)
This course fulfills the social science requirement for undergraduate students in education.  The course is also offered at the graduate level for students wishing to explore language policy issues in Europe at that level. Academic Credits

Students earn 6 credit hours for course work completed.  This is a UFIC program, so students can earn credits to satisfy major, minor, and university requirements while living and studying in Paris with top UF professors.

At the heart of the European Union and less than two hours from Brussels, Paris is a crucial economic and cultural force within the European and global community. Paris is simultaneously recognized for the charm of its cobblestone streets and regal residences, the beauty of its architecture, the mystique of its Eiffel Tower and the unparalleled museums, private collections, and monuments that dominate the art world today.  A fine blend of the ancient and the modern, Paris’ rich history, cultural institutions and archives present a trove for students of all disciplines. Drawing on the expertise of a wide array of academic fields and affording students first-hand experience of social and cultural institutions studied, the Paris Research Center  EOSL Bilingual Education Program is expressly designed to benefit from the city’s cultural richness, central location, history and vibrant urban life as well as academic resources.

This program is open to students from all majors; you do not have to speak French to attend. All students with a 3.0 GPA or above are encouraged to apply. (GEN ED requirements apply) This is a competitive program; we advise all interested students to apply as soon as possible. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Available to eligible resident and non-resident students.

Printed advisement sheets are available at the PRC offices in 157 Dauer Hall and at the International Center in 123 Grinter Hall, or can be downloaded from the site (PDF). Space is limited; we advise all candidates to apply as soon as possible.
