With this in mind, the UF International Center has created Paris: Cultural History and the Public Sphere, an innovative weeklong program at the University of Florida Paris Research Center expressly designed to provide UF Alumni an unforgettable experience in the City of Light. Program highlights will include a visit to the Chateau de Versailles, a Seine River boat cruise, and numerous visits to major museums, monuments, exhibitions, and more! UF Paris Research Center programs are conceived to draw on the city’s rich cultural history and vibrant urban life as academic resources, placing program participants at the heart of its aesthetic, cultural and intellectual challenges. A blend of the ancient and the modern, the fascinating Parisian landscape offers stimulation at every turn. Paris: Cultural History and the Public SphereAn inspiration to centuries of artists, writers, scientists and statesmen, Paris continues to enchant by its complexities and contrasts. A crucial economic and political force within the European and the global communities and a center of cutting-edge scientific thought, Paris is simultaneously recognized for the charm of its cobblestone streets, regal residences, the beauty of its architecture, the mystique of its Eiffel Tower and unparalleled museums, private collections, and monuments that dominate the art world today. Program FeaturesThis program features guest lectures and site visits conducted by Dr. Gayle Zachmann (Director, Paris Research Center; Associate Professor of French), specialist of French cultural production of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dr. Zachmann will survey major intellectual literary and artistic movements of Paris via a series of visits and guest lectures. Dr. Richard Conley (Associate Professor of Political Science) comparative specialist of American and French/European governments, will provide an overview of the French political institutions and currents of the 5th Republic. Distinguished Professor of Landscape Architecture and two-time winner of the Prix de Rome, R. Terry Schnadelbach will introduce alumni to the philosophy and physical evolution of the city space, studying both historic and contemporary physical transformations of the public sphere. Academics and Cultural ImmersionThis program is designed for Alumni who seek an intellectually stimulating and culturally enriching overseas experience as well as the opportunity to meet distinguished UF faculty. In addition to daily visits, guest lectures and cultural activities, alumni will benefit from joint activities with UF students. An Extraordinary LocaleThe UF Paris Research Center centrally locates alumni at the heart of Paris’s Montparnasse district in Columbia University’s Reid Hall building. A landmark of academic life since the 19th century, Reid Hall is known to house the most elite American academic programs in France. The University of Florida Paris Research Center (PRC) joined the Reid Hall community in 2003 to facilitate exchange and promote the development of new international endeavors. The PRC is a two-minute walk from the Luxembourg Gardens and Paris's Latin Quarter, also known as the "student quarter". Cafes, restaurants, theatres, and boutiques as well as cobblestone streets and the facades of the Pantheon, Sorbonne, and Notre Dame Cathedral all contribute to the rich ambiance of the quarter. EligibilityThis program is open to UF alumni from all fields and interests; you do not have to speak French to attend. Applications will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. We advise all interested participants to apply as soon as possible as group will be limited to 16 participants.
