"I applied to the Scholars Program with the intention of furthering my fieldwork experience in ethnomusicology by studying music in Brazil. I hope to create a cross cultural dialogue with musicians that allows for a greater understanding of how globalization affects "traditional" music in Brazil, the development of new music, and the associated cultures."

Research Description
Bateria no Bolso: The Brazilian Pandeiro as Both an Intercultural Mediator and Example of Hybridity in Brazil

My research examines the role of the Brazilian pandeiro in both musical and cultural contexts throughout Brazil and abroad. In a country known for its diverse musical styles, the pandeiro, a small frame drum played with an advanced technique, has become the most identifiable percussion instrument in Brazil. Sometimes referred to as the “bateria no bolso” (drumset in a bag), the pandeiro is able to replicate groupings of rhythmic patterns, from the large batucadas of Brazil’s samba schools to the northeastern folk music known as forró.

I contend that the pandeiro not only displays the hybridity and cultural forces that helped to shape Brazilian music, but also acts as an intercultural mediator, absorbing American influences such as funk, hip-hop, and jazz. This research explores the development of the pandeiro from a commonplace accompaniment to its present day status as a virtuosic instrument that is gaining worldwide recognition through performers such as Marcos Suzano, Bernardo Aguiar, and Scott Feiner.
