Featured Scholar: Susan Jean
History major Susan Jean is the winner of the University Scholars Program's
inaugural year research paper competition. Her paper, "When the Very
Best Citizens Were Murderers: The Discourse of Lynching in Florida,"
was recognized as the Best Qualitative Research Paper at the USP Symposium
on April 1. "I was drawn to the topic in part by the disturbing reality
that we know so little about such a recent, barbaric practice," Jean
says. "There are no official records of Florida lynchings, so trying
to compile that kind of information appealed to me."
